Country Wildflowers and Indian Summer Pattern Tips

Both patterns are very similar with a slight variation to the center log cabin blocks. Colors and fabric choices can make a sunny warm modern quilt or generate a cool primitive satisfaction.

Below is a step by step pictorial for making the petals and pinwheels that apply to each quilt pattern

In the ‘petal section’ of the Country Wildflowers and Indian Summer patterns, I create corner triangles and a half square triangle using a square and a rectangle. Following the directions in the petal section, place the square and the rectangle right sides together and draw a diagonal line corner to corner. Draw a second diagonal line 1/4" away from the first as shown in the photo.

When making corner triangles, there is fabric underneath that needs to be trimmed away. Instead of wasting or separating that fabric by trimming, i decided to create half square triangles to use in the quilt. It’s easy to do…and here’s how.

I love to chain piece; one right after the other without breaking the stitch. Sew on the first drawn line (corner to corner) which will create a 'corner triangle'.

The next step is to run the same units through the sewing machine again...this time stitching 1/4" AWAY from the second drawn line to create a half square triangle

Cut through the drawn line that has no stitching, separating it into 2 separate units.

The left unit will be part of your petal with the corner triangle and the unit on the right will be a half square triangle used in the pinwheels.

Both Indian Summer and Country Wildflowers patterns have step by step instructions with detailed black and white diagrams. Please read each step carefully as you build your flower and pinwheel blocks.

Continue to follow the pattern steps, to complete the petal sections and square up those cute half square triangles.
