Brr It’s Cold Outside … Limited Time Freebie

Well this was a lot of fun to design!

It all began with the idea of creating something using my low volume fabric for Riley Blake Designs. Their Hush Hush 4 collection launched in October, is made up of 12 different low volume fabrics specially designed by 12 different RBD designers. Mine is called Wink Wink. Why that name? Well, we don’t get a lot of snow… and when it does snow, i feel as though the flakes are teasing me with a ‘wink wink’.

The temps have been freezing the past week or so and of course a snowman seemed to be the right choice…so, "‘Brrr It’s Cold Outside’ started to take form.

Wink Wink fabric for the Snowman Win!

The version above has black added to the top of the hat and a black pom pom. As i moved forward with my ideas, i changed it to the same red on top of the hat as the main portion …with a gold pom pom of stars.

I found these changes went really well with my embellishments. However, i do like the black version too!

Snow Winds is the digital quilting design.

I don’t know how other designers create…but i tend to create as I go.

Once i got the snowman together i started thinking about the embellisments. Buttons? Ribbon? I started digging in my bag of vintage trims…and that is when i found my tea dyed office tags. Oh, hmmm… could these be buttons? Oh yes they can! I wanted and you may want to, stamp a star on the tags. I could not find my stamp and i know it would be so cute!

Then in that same bag of trim, i found the scarf. Tea dyed to perfection! That’s when i changed the black pom pom to gold.

The gold stars are actually from my new RBD fabric line called Sewing Your Oats and it’s landing in shops this month!

Digging around some more…i found rusty pins and jingle bells and the cutest little bell ever for his nose!

The tiny twigs for his arms are lightly brushed with a white sharpie.

All of the embellishments are sewn on with LYI Silk thread after the quilt was quilted. I used a double layer of Hobbs cotton/wool blend for batting.

I’m thinking you may need new twigs next year. They might break when stored.

As a Thank you to all of you who so kindly support my little business. ‘Brr It’s Cold Outside’ (measures 20” x 25”) will be free on my website through December 31st.
